Not too early a start, to probably the furthest we have travelled for a day event. Both skiffs, and Speedwell riding piggy back, made the journey down to Dumfries and beyond, which went by quickly with plenty of chat. The day was sunny and raining but not much wind. We arrived at Glencapple to re fuel our energy levels at the lovely wee cafe whilst having our briefing, and were given directions and maps whilst enjoying the views over the estuary of the Nith.
We thought this would be just a gentle enjoyable row in company, but Cox Phil had other ideas for our St Baldred crew of Jacque, Finlay, Elisa and Sheena. Johnny coxed John B with Jo, Clive, Maggie and Graham with Big John and Robbie being coxed by Heather in Speedwell. Six boats including us were involved: Carricks with Carrick Maid; Troon with Ailsa Lass and North Queensferry with Ferry Sonnet.
The tide was flooding fast by the time we all got our boats in the water. Troon did look like they were struggling before they even started, trying to move up to the start with a strong current against them. By this time the rain was very heavy and we were all wrapped up against the elements. The boats were set off at 30 second or so intervals and within about five mins we were heated up again; but Phil said" no stopping we are going to win this one". Not easy when you are as wet on the inside as out, and much too hot.
We flew along, assisted by the tide, scenery was very pretty with a lot of very country smells. A small smattering of supporters along the way helped to push us on. We passed Troon quite quickly then just kept pulling hard. St Baldred really did us proud and was a total joy to row. Speedwell kept coming more into focus which just encouraged us to keep going. St Baldred crossed the finish line first at Whitesands to quite a crowd. As this was a timed race we had no idea who had come first.
We then all waited at the weir and enjoyed much needed drinks and jelly babies until everyone else had come over the line to row back in company to Kingholm Quay. The boats were lifted out by a fork lift and cradle system and swung round onto their waiting trailers. We were ushered into the warmth of the Swan Hotel, a fantastic fire and much needed refreshments with lovely burgers to replenish our energy stores. Each crew was presented with a fantastic special bottling of blended malt whisky, with the SCRA label emblazoned on the front.
To the prizes: Speedwell 53 mins got a booby prize of a fantastic bag of cheeses (they were not a mixed crew). St Baldred 53 min 20 came in first and were presented with a lovely quaiche. John B 54 mins 50. Ferry Sonnet 60mins 45. Carrick Maid 61mins 10. Aisla Lass 64 mins dead. We were all made very welcome and well looked after. It took us a while to dry off and a few drinks later we hooked up for the journey back north.
A most enjoyable day in great company, excellent rowing and definitely worth doing again.
